Chu-Mei Ho - Jewellery Tutor
Beginners/ Intermediate Beading, metal clay, wire wrapping, fused glass jewellery and various taster classes.
Previous Qualifications & Training:
Before getting into jewellery making, I studied Set and Costume design, and received a BA in Stage Management and Theatre Production and an MA in Theatre Arts. All of this gave me a lot of experience in design, and making stage set models was certainly good practice when it comes to working with detailed, intricate pieces. I took a lot of courses to learn more about jewellery making techniques with various British, American and European artists. I have an Art Clay Level 1 and 2 certification, an MCJS diploma in Silver Metal Clay Proficiency and Rio Rewards PMC® Certification
In addition to that, I have got plenty of experience just making things for myself from the many great crafting books available.
How did you get involved in making jewellery?
Well I guess I can blame my parents for getting me into crafting, not that I am complaining! When I was younger my parents made Chinese knotting jewellery and accessories, which I used to love helping them with and it all started from there.
I have always enjoyed making things, especially sewing and crochet. After buying lots of buttons to decorate some tote bags I was making, I ended up having way too many. There had to be a way to use all of those pretty buttons so I started making jewellery with them. I enjoyed it so much it led me to look at other types of jewellery making techniques.
Things I have done:
I used to work as a visual merchandiser for a Swedish furniture company. The job normally involved planning the store layout, displays and making things look pretty etc.
Things I do now:
Selling my own jewellery and accessories while teaching at London Jewellery School.
My biggest achievement so far:
Two of my metal clay rings were in Holly Gage’s The Art and Design of Metal Clay Jewelry and More 2012 and 2013 calendar, along with all the other amazing metal clay artists’ work.
Things I hope to achieve in the future:
Simply just to be happy and continue doing things that I have a passion for; learning and creating.
Three words that describe me are:
Cheerful, energetic, patient.
I am inspired by:
Everything and sometimes I find the best designs come from trial and error.
My favourite jeweller is:
I can’t decide who is my favourite one!
