Hayley Kruger - Jewellery Tutor
Diploma mentor, Beginners and intermediate silver, stone setting, soldering, beading, leather and jewellery business.
Previous Qualifications & Training:
BA Hon in Silversmithing, Jewellery & Allied Crafts from Sir John Cass – London Metropolitan University.
Introduction to metal work certificate – Central St Martins
How I got involved in making jewellery:
I have always created things from my dolls clothes to my own, accessories, jewellery and craft. The house I grew up in was built on clay soil, so I used to sculpt and bake the clay into pottery, figurines and beads. And when I finally decided that I had to focus my creativity to one area I chose to start by doing a beginners course in metal & bench work. It was a good place to start, as I knew then that jewellery was my calling.
Things I have done:
After completing my BA, I went on to design costume jewellery for many of the High Street’s most recognisable names such as Marks & Spencer, River Island, Morgan, Next and Lola Rose. And I have designed several pieces for music videos and album covers.
A few highlights have been showing some of my work at the V&A, being a guest designer for Triumph Lingerie's Women in Making campaign and being a guest designer on Jewellery Maker TV.
Things I do now:
My main focus now is dividing my time between creating bespoke and commissioned pieces for private clients, as well as consulting small jewellery business on ranges, design and production. And of course I love being a tutor for LJS and various other organisations and community groups.
My biggest achievement so far:
Believing in myself and pushing myself to learn and grow even when the hurdles seem so high. As a result I was invited to show my work at the Victoria & Albert Museum, I have been published in Vogue, Stylist and Marie Claire to name a few. And I was invited to be an ambassador for Triumph Lingerie's Women in Making campaigns 2013 and 2014.
Things I hope to achieve in the Future:
I love the process of making so I look forward to welcoming more inspiring commissions and working with beautiful stones.
Three words that describe me are:
Tenacious, independent and friendly.
I am inspired by:
Colour is my main source of inspiration, and no matter how hard I try to use muted colours, a flash of bright fuchsia or some tropical hue always seems to find is way into my work.
Recently I have found myself drawn back to my roots by being drawn to traditional techniques and skills.
My Favourite Jeweller is:
There are so many that I love and when I am able to, I try and collect the work of my contemporaries. At the moment I have a fantasy wish list of pieces from contemporary/traditional jeweller Tomasz Donocik and pearl designer Melanie Georgacopoulos.
