Karen Young - Marketing Co-ordinator
Previous Qualifications & Training:
Believe it or not, for the majority of my career to date I worked as a Programme Manager in the City of London for large blue-chip companies delivering people, process and technology changes. I have a degree in International Business and Modern Languages from the University of Strathclyde (yes i am a Scot!) where i majored in Marketing and French.
After the birth of my two children I decided to take an extended career break to spend time with them when they were little.
How I got involved in making jewellery:
I have made jewellery in one shape or form since i was a child. I remember getting my ears pierced and making all my own wire wrapped earrings as i didn't want to wear what all my friends were wearing. I got into silversmithing after the birth of my first child when i did the Beginners Silver Jewellery workshop here at the school. As soon as i finished it i was totally in love with the process of transforming sheet metal, wire and tubing into something beautiful and artistic!
I did lots of courses over a four year period in the holidays, evenings and weekends to build my skills before completing a Level 1 Certificate in Silversmithing in 2014/2015. I lauched my own jewellery business - Karen Young Handmade Jewellery in the summer 2015.
My favourite techniques are press forming, metal stamping and stone setting.
Things I have done:
I lived in France for a year as part of my degree - it was the most amazing year and i learned so much!
I have a Grade 6 qualification in Ballet, Tap and Modern dance.
I attended Glasgow School of Art as a teenager studying fine art.
My biggest achievements so far:
There are so many things i am proud of and i have been lucky enough to be involved in some massive and life-changing projects. I was so proud when my website went live in June 2015 and i made my first sale!
But my biggest achievement is having my gorgeous two boys, Jack and Danny - the path to having them wasn't easy, but they light up my life.
Things I hope to achieve in the future:
I want to continue to build my business and to create meaningful keepsake jewellery that people treasure and love for generations!
Three words that describe me are:.
Fun, hard-working, and friendly!
I am inspired by:
The natural world and its quirks and variety!
My favourite jeweller is:
I have so many i admire, and I have been so privileged to have been taught by so many amazing jewellers who have been so generous with sharing their knowledge. I particularly love the work of Anastasia Young - i refer to her jewellery techniques book all the time!
