This is an evening course running one evening per week over 5 consecutive weeks.
Learn the age old technique of lost wax carving - a fascinating way of making silver and gold jewellery by carving shapes out of wax, then creating a mould of the wax, melting the wax and pouring molten silver or gold in to make a solid silver version of your wax mould. A great class for anyone interested in making Jewellery. Students will need to pay for the amount of silver and gold that is used in their jewellery.
In the class all students will learn to carve and shape the wax into different shapes and design whole pieces of jewellery in wax. These wax pieces are then sent off in the week for casting which is where the moulds are made by a casting company and they pour in the molten silver or gold. Then the following week the wax designs will come back in silver ready to add any finishing touches and be polished ready to wear.
Students will be able to make a number of designs throughout the course as well as learning the techniques.
As with all of our wax classes you will need to pay for the pieces you have cast in silver, gold or other metals. As a guide most silver rings cost around £7-25 and smaller pieces such as earrings and pendents are often around £5-12 bigger pieces will be more but the tutor will always check the price with you before casting.
Topics and areas usually covered in this class include:
- Basic designing for wax caving
- Qualities and properties of different forms of wax
- Using wax carving tools to achieve your designs
- Cleaing up the pieces once they have been cast
- Making finished pieces of jewellery using the wax carving process
and much more.
As with all of our classes, all materials are included in the cost of the class (except casting costs for this class) as well as plenty of tea coffee and luxury biscuits! The classes are all run by expert tutors with years of professional experience who are friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. The size of the classes is kept small to allow plenty of one-on-one attention and the maximum number of students for this class is 8.
If you have any questions regarding this, or other courses please don't hesitate to get in touch.
