LJS founder Jessica wins top entrepreneur award

London Jewellery School founder Jessica Rose has won The Artemis Award for business owners aged 25 and under in the NatWest Everywoman Awards.

The awards recognise women in business and champion female entrepreneurship and previous award winners include Hilary Devey, now well-known from Dragons’ Den, and cosmetics entrepreneur Jo Malone.

Jessica was presented with the award at a gala lunch at London’s Dorchester hotel.

Jessica impressed the judges by having built a very successful business in a very short time and showing tremendous tenacity in overcoming business difficulties. She was just 21 when she started offering jewellery classes in Dulwich in South London  using savings and a bank loan totalling £15,000 to found LJS. She had to battle to overcome issues with premises and the financial challenges of running a new business but it has been worthwhile because LJS is now the largest independent provider of amateur and professional courses in jewellery making, with 80 different classes taught across two studios by 25 world-class professional tutors.

‘Setting up a business in the recession isn’t easy but I saw a gap in the market, made a business plan and just went for it. The main advice I would give to others thinking of setting up their own business is to find something you are passionate about, you will be spending many long hours working on your business and need to have the drive and determination to keep going even though the tough times,’ says Jessica, who now passes on her experience through our business classes, including the distance learning business course.
