  • Description
Learn modern alchemy in this 5 week evening course packed with hints and tips designed to take you from beginners level to more advanced.

Metal clay is a clay-like substance made of silver recycled from X-rays and photographs, an organic binder and some water. It can be moulded and shaped like clay and can be fired with a torch (a creme brule torch will do!) or in a kiln all of the binder burns away and you are left with solid silver - it's like magic! The silver left is real silver and is of hallmark quality.

One of the great advantages to working in metal clay is that it is relatively easy to continue working at home after the class without a big investment as you don't need many tools or equipment.

This beginners metal clay class gives you a chance to work with a fantastic material that produces great results. Each week we will be working towards making a new piece of beautiful silver jewellery that you can take home with you.

Techniques covered in this class include:
  • Rolling out the clay to a consistent thickness
  • Texturing and cutting out shapes
  • Sanding, polishing and drilling
  • Torch firing and basics of kiln firing
  • Basic stone setting
  • Adding multiple layers of clay
  • Creating simple beads and much more...

Throughout the course you will be able to make 5 or more lovely pieces of solid silver jewellery and have lots of new ideas and inspiration to take away with you.

What you will learn

Week 1 - Introduction to metal clay. An experienced tutor will guide you through the basics of metal clay, what it is, different types and the pros and cons of each. You will then experiment with the clay and make a professional quality pair of silver earrings, or a pendent if you prefer. The aim of this week is to introduce students to the material and make a piece from start to finish. Torch firing will also be covered so that you can make pieces from home after the class.

Week 2 - Pendant making and stone setting. Learn the basics of setting stones in metal clay and make a double layered stone set pendant.

Week 3 - Making a charm or pendant using moulding compound.

Week 4 - Ring making. You will make a simple band with a CZ stone (set using syringe).

Week 5 - Combine your skills to make a lovely Pandora Style bead

By the end of the course you will leave with a gorgeous collection of beautiful silver jewellery pieces, as well as your new found skills in making silver jewellery which can be used as a hobby, for making presents for friends or perhaps even for a business. The course is aimed at complete beginners and the tutor will give you plenty of support and advice about carrying on working with metal clay after the class from home.

All materials are provided for you to make your pieces and we have a lovely studio fully equipped for working in metal clay.

This class is suitable for absolute beginners and everyone is welcome.
This class runs from 6.30pm-9pm once a week from the start date for five consecutive weeks. Please note: we don't close for bank holidays.

What you need to bring to this class:
For this class you don't need to bring anything but yourself as everything is provided. However if you have any ideas of what you would like to make, feel free to bring pictures or sketches.
